A Royal Celebration will take place from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, December 8 at the Cain Center for the 50th Anniversary of the Crowning of Athens' own Miss Texas 1964, the late Sharon McCauley.
Meet Miss Texas 2013, Ivana Hall; photographs and autographs will be available.
The celebration will include a reception, refreshments, presentations and memorabilia display.
This event is free and presented in conjunction with the Henderson County Historical Museum.
Miss Texas 1964 Sharon McCauley
2014 marks the 50th Anniversary of the crowning of Miss Texas 1964. Born October 9, 1944, Miss Athens Sharon McCauley, 19, a vocalist who sang “Let Me Entertain You” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from “Gypsy” won the state crown in 1964 and was named 3rd Runner-Up to Miss America. Shortly thereafter, she and her family were invited to the White House to meet President Lyndon Johnson.
Sharon continued her interest and support in the Miss Texas Pageant throughout her life, helping young women better themselves through their pageant pursuits. She served as an emcee, judge, donor and coordinated the annual alumni luncheon for many years.
Sharon passed away in Southlake on September 8, 2009, after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. She is survived by her husband, L. Van Jones; mother, Fritzi Rizer; brother, Gary McCauley and wife, Beckie; daughter, Susanne Swift Regan and husband, John; son, Bill Swift III and wife, Amy; and stepdaughters, Dee Dee Sifuentes and husband, Adrian, and Dana Bailey and husband, Scott.
