Looking for a place to retire? You’ve come to the right place. Athens has been recognized as one of the first Certified Retirement Community’s in the state of Texas.

Former state Senator Todd Staples believes Athens has proved itself worthy of the designation. “Athens hosts quality medical facilities, is home to a large community college system and maintains a myriad of recreational attractions including numerous golf courses and lakes,” Staples said. “Athens also has many civic and volunteer organizations reflecting its strong community values.” State Rep. Betty Brown recommended the city of Athens for the CRC designation. “Athens is in a prime position to become a CRC with the many amenities available, including the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, the East Texas Arboretum and the North East Texas Center for the Arts,” Brown said in her recommendation letter. “Athenians are also blessed with facilities such as the local East Texas Medical Center and Trinity Valley Community College.”
